When the weather is very hot, very cold, or very stormy, your pets can be in danger. It is important that they are protected during such times to avoid any harm that may becaused to them.
1. Provide Shelter: In the hot weather, make sure to give your pets some place to hide from the sun and lots of water to drink. Don’t let them stay outside for too long. In winter, it is recommended to keep the animal in a warm, protected from wind and moisture, insulated shelter. These areas are perfect during very high or very low temperatures.
2. Monitor Temperature: Pay attention to the temperature and humidity. When it comes to dogs, a general guideline is that if it feels hot to you, it is hot for the dog. Likewise, in winter, monitor the pet’s sensitivity to the cold; some animals are small or have short hair, and may require a jacket.
3. Hydration and Nutrition: Make sure your pets are drinking water especially when the weather is hot. In the cold season, they may require food to generate body heat hence their feeding should be increased.
4. Prepare for Emergencies: Make sure to prepare an emergency kit which should contain food, water, medicines, and a first aid box. In the event of a severe weather warning, you should know where you will take your pets in case of an emergency.
5. Stay Indoors During Storms: In cases of thunderstorms or strong winds, it is best to keep pets inside the house so they won’t get scared and lost. Help them to feel comfortable and safe.
If you follow these tips, you will be able to protect your pets during severe weather conditions and they will not suffer from cold or heat.
